Henry Fonda was born into a family of Christian Scientists, and his sheltered upbringing led to him being incredibly shy for the entirety of his life. This shyness caused the actor to bottle up his emotions, which proved disastrous for his personal relationships. Over the course of his life, Henry was married five times. Only two of these marriages lasted over a decade, though Henry remained with his fifth and final wife up until the time of his death. Henry’s failure in the marriage department came in contrast to his success in the entertainment industry, where he made a name for himself by starring in such pictures as The Grapes of Wrath.
In addition to being sheltered as a child, Henry also witnessed a lynching during his upbringing that would leave a dark shadow over the rest of his days. Decades later, another death would occur in close proximity to the actor when his third wife committed suicide. The reason for his third wife’s suicide was that Henry wanted a divorce, and he wanted the divorce so he could marry his mistress.
Other dark secrets that Henry Fonda hid away from the public include the fact that he was abusive towards his children. Join Facts Verse as we explore how Henry Fonda was no hero, after all, he had dark secrets.
